I found this coin while going through some wheat cents.
I noticed something on the rim and thought it looked like it maybe was a clip. I held another cent up to it and found that the curve on the “clip” doesn’t match the curve of the intact cent.
I’m not familiar with the type of error so I have no clue if the clip should match perfectly with the curve of the coin.
Before I toss this back into the pile as nothing I’d like to know if it is indeed a clip and hopefully learn something in the process.
Thanks to all who help :)

I'm no expert but it looks to me like damage to the coin, but I focus mostly on silver so I have only a few wheat cents. A clip would be an even cut I believe and that looks like it was broken off.

Yeah I’m thinking it’s damage. I’d guess it was a bump from being dropped but there’s no raised metal around the area and I don’t know if a cent is heavy enough to receive that type of damage from being dropped.

I don't think it is a clip, either, but it looks to me like a grinding wheel was used to try to make it look like a clip. Not only can you see what looks like marks from a grinder in the edge photo but you can also see slight evidence of two "straight cuts" next to one another, one about half as long as the other.

If you zoom in on the edge photo you can see parallel, vertical (if the coin were laying flat) lines. Are those the marks you are referring to?

Yes! The lines that cross the edge from rim-to-rim.

Agree 100% with this. I am not a clip expert. But the clips I have seen are smooth and uniform. And when you think about how they are created, it makes sense to be that way.
