I recently purchased this coin from a local B&M. I realize there is some verdigris on the surfaces. When buying I didn’t think it was so bad that the coin couldn’t be saved. Although, I wouldn’t actually know since I’ve never dealt with a coin that had verdigris. I’m the last, I’ve done some minor searching on eBay for 2 cent pieces, and compared to what I’ve seen I thought the remaining detail on this coin was great. As a bonus there’s an approximate 25 degree die rotation. What I’m mostly curious of is whether the coin has obvious signs of cleaning that my untrained eye isn’t detecting and is it likely that the verdigris can be removed without there being any serious issues left? Lastly, was $45 a decent price for the piece? The dealer gave me a plastic tube for halves at no extra cost.
Nice coin. I always been fascinated with two cent coins myself. It was our first coin to bear the phrase, “In God We Trust”..... 1865 is common. Second highest mintage of the series. I don’t see any signs of cleaning and I do see some verdigris on the surface. It’s the greenish stuff around the rim and prominent above America. Easily enough to mitigate. It is probably an AU piece. I believe the price was fair. I would certainly enjoy that coin.
Classic EF-40 although someone tried to lift some of the verdigris on the obverse at 8k. It will probably tone down eventually. You might try a toothpick on some of the other stuff to see if it moves easily. It's a decent coin and a lot better than the pieces with no "WE" showing that some people try to palm off as high grade.
nice looking coin. XF sharpness. little soak in acetone and then Verdicare would help remove some verdigris
Cannot tell for certain, but looks like a bit of die polishing to the "OF"; and perhaps some minor with "STATES". Nice coin.
Conservation and restoration is usually kept sacred to only a few coins. Not all are candidates and usually once you start it only leaves you with the notion that you should keep going. I would leave the coin as is, even though it has some slight problems, they are best left present for the new owner, if sold. I like it, has a nice original look.
Without the verdigris, I think $45 is OK. But with it, it is not. I think there was a bargaining opportunity there if you wanted this coin. He'd probably complain, but accept $30.
I tried finding verdicare for sale somewhere online but couldn’t find it anywhere. Not even eBay of Amazon! I will certainly try acetone and a toothpick.
