I was wondering if anyone knows the reasons could be for this nickels low weight. Also it has a different color is sandy looking and texture feels diferent.
Environmental Damage and Circulation Wear. That Nickel was probably detected at a beach where it was buried for many years. You can say it was sandblasted.
That coin is just damaged or as we here at Coin Talk !! say DEFDAM (definitely damaged). With any minted coin, there are tolerances. A coin can weigh a little below or a little above and still be considered normal. With your coin's obvious wear and the tolerance variance, the 4.6 weight is considered "normal". You have a roughed up 2000 D Jefferson nickel that's worth....5 cents. I was going to welcome you to Coin Talk !! but I see that you've been with us since May of 2018. You should post more pix and/or ask more questions. Find a thread that interests you and follow along participating in the conversations. In general, just try to enjoy the "coin vibe" we try to nurture and encourage here at Coin Talk !! You are always welcome to ask any questions and post any photos.
It has probably been subjected to some type of chemical etching with has removed enough of the metal to result in the lowered weight.
Damaged by the environment. Looks like it's spent years on a beach, in a rock tumbler or rubbed by a bored person with sandpaper. The loss of metal will reduce the weight.
