I have this coin here.A 1989 washington quarter. That seems to have a mint error on the words In God We Trust. In stead it looks like W God We Trust. Is this a known mint error? If so what kind of value would a coin like this have? Thanks for the help guys.

    Welcome to CoinTalk @jayden !

I am not an expert in coin errors, but I have been studying and looking at many coins. To me, it looks like your coin suffered damage after it left the mint. It's value? 25 cents!

If you look closely at the motto, you'll see that the I in IN GOD WE TRUST got hit near the bottom of it and pushed it over into the N making it look like a W.
Again, looking closely, you can see the outline of the former positioning of the I.

Remember that, after the coin is struck at the mint, the metal of the numbers and letters is raised above the background metal, and, as such, can be hit and broken loose and moved over.
What hit it, and how was it hit, in such a "perfect" way to cause that and only that?

    We will probably never know.

Just like your other quarter, it is PMD.

Isn't it strange that the same guy gets 2 different coins that have similar hit damage that causes similar "mis-spellings" ?

I agree. Those two are strange.
Personally, I would keep them. I think we all have what we may call an "Oddities" box.

The I in IN has been moved to create this 'W', so basically I think it is an altered coin. That said, it looks to me not to be a hit that created it, though that might not be able to be ruled out, but done purposely. Someone playing around.

Incorrect. It took a hit and altered the letters. Occured after it left the Mint.
    Definitely Damaged.

Lucky for me my particular 89p quarter with same damage also has a cud as perhaps a value guarantee. Not sure on how to chime thread owner jayden, but would love for a cud check running reverse side from middle bar of F in of, the left bottom tip of A in america off the other side of that bar of A to trailing to the wing. Tiny. You got it? If so, I have a long list of hypotheses to posit on a different thread. Cheers.

A counting machine or some such thing did that. That said, I think it's pretty cool-looking.
