Hello. Is this no cents 1883 Nickel a proof? Or not? The detail is great to the eye. Photos are through a 7x. Also what do you think is going on at the rim aroun 9 o’clock? It looks like I’d best describe it as a delamination. Any thoughts? Thanks
I do not think your your coin is the 03 Cud as it is in a different location. I'm not saying it is not a Cud, but it is not a match for the coin pictured on the website.
Based on (the out of focus photogs) I don't think the coin is 'proof' in nature. Or not nature.......
I think you have a rim cud. And a very well struck business strike also has some planchet alloy mix issues causing the wood grain toning on the reverse due to more copper present. Nice coin
I sent photos of the coin into JC Stevens of the cud-on-coins website that @Paddy54 directed me to. JC replied to me that in his opinion it is a "folded fin" and not a cud. Either way it's interesting to me and I got a quick crash course in cuds, retained cuds, die cracks, and now i'm on the lookout! I think I already found another 1883 with a true cud on eBay i've got a small bid on Attached is a better closeup photo of the area.
Looking at the edge will tell you if it is a proof or not. If there is any beveling, it is not a proof

MS strike from retired proof die now striking ms coins. They actullly increased the diameter from the diameter of a shield nickel platchet. I'm sure they wanted push each die pair to the fullest strike range.as early shield nickel dies only had about 10,000 strikes before the die exploded !
For what it's worth, here is an 1883 No Cents Nickel Proof. This is somewhat expense because it's one year type, which limited the number Proofs compared to all the other dates. If you are a type collector who wants all the Proofs, you need one of these coins.
