Somebody offered this to me for $75 do you think thats a fair price. How much would you pay for this?
Here is a eBay listing of recently sold 1886 V nickels: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313.TR4.TRC1.A0.H0.X1886 v nickel.TRS0&_nkw=1886 v nickel&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=1886 nickel&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1 Not familiar with the series but it looks like a key or semi-key date. Condition is everything though and this one looks pretty beat up, maybe AG at best. I would not buy it at that price, but you should wait for one of our resident v nickel experts to chime in. TC
PCGS price guide (which I believe is high retail) has a G04 at $180. The coin you posted has multiple issues: scratched, cleaned. I wouldn't want to own that coin. So in my mind, the $75 is way too high.
2020 Red book. says 225 for g4 that's probably A G tho not sure what they call the lower now , anybody?
About Good, damaged and cleaned. Even if a key date, in that condition it makes it pretty undesirable to most anyone who'd be interested in one that has a modest income.
Don't get 'skunked'. Don't do it...... I mean, for cring out loud, the coin is less than 'good'. Don't get suckered.....
That is a key date. But unless you’re trying to assemble a set of Liberty nickels, I’d sure save the $75 for something else. By the way, Red Book prices are notoriously inaccurate.
I'd say $75 is fair as a filler in a one-sided Blue Whitman folder. If you're trying to complete a set and don't mind having lower-grade examples then go with this one. However, if you want to put together a nicer set overall and don't mind paying more $$$ then I'd pass until a nicer example came along.
There are so many nice coins out there. I can see buying something pretty with a small problem but the coin in question is just ugly. I would wait for something better.
I would pass. I bought too many junk coins early on that I regret now and can’t sell for anywhere near what I paid.
Who among us didn't? I didn't even try to sell the ill-advised purchases of my youth. Instead I just stored them away, and then bequeathed them to my son when he got old enough to be interested in coins. Now they're his problem.
In that condition they're selling on ebay right now for around that price, so you're probably OK. I've seen a lot of coins sell too high on ebay, though. If I'm going to buy a coin in AG3 condition just to fill a hole in an album, I'll wait until I can go to a show where there are a lot of dealers. You can usually get better deals that way.
don Oswald. My own feeling is that $75. for such a coin is outrageous. That slick seller was probably expecting you to offer $55. Then he would say let's make it $65. And you'd shake hands, after the "deal", and you'd never see him again !!!
Key date coins, especially in low grades like like the 1886 nickel, have really come down in price in the past decade. The internet has shown the market just how common they are. The Red Book has never caught up. This would be a $75-100 without the reverse scratches. I see $60 for this coin.
AG-3 sharpness with scratches and cleaning nets it down to Fair-2 price wise. Unless you are on a super low budget, I would pass.
