I’ve got a bunch of rusted coins here that I am going to soak in 100% extra virgin olive oil to see what happens to them. Feel free to comment or share your own experiences with rusted coin conservation.
Glad you are having fun with these. I want to do some more experimenting with sodium sulfite for a reducing agent. Consider getting a brass brush and doing some light brushing.
Thanks, it’s fun to test on coins I won’t cry over if they get ruined. And, I’m moving here in a few months and everything must go! I need to decide what stays and not. I’m not going to transport rusted coins across the globe, but if they can be preserved a little with oil, I’ll keep them. NaSo3 right? Been over a decade since I took chemistry... is that corrosive?
Na2SO3, depends on what you call corrosive. If I get it on my hands, I rinse it off. The idea is that it goes to Na2SO4 (oxidized, so something else has to get reduced...hopefully the oxygen from the metal oxide.)
