Here is a new one I just got. They are decent pics, but like most lustorous coins, they just don't do the coin any justice. Try and guess the grade, guess the tpg as well, and you get a pat one the back, guess the cert. number and well,....You're just amazing!!
here is another one I picked up a little while ago. The holder is scratched up pretty bad, I would love to see this one out of the holder!!Crack it?????
The first coin in an NGC graded coin. My guess is MS-66, although it looks like a 64 to me. The coin just lacks strike detail IMHO. No detracting marks, but a really mushy strike, something more common among the early years of Jefferson nickels.
Those are some really nice early Jeffersons! I would recommend trying Turtle Wax on the Holders and if that doesn't work, send them back to the TPG's for re-holdering. They will re-holder the coins for a fairly small fee and probably have the fees listed on their' websites. Frank
1939-S---NGC MS65. Maybe it is just the lighting but the hair looks like it is weakly struck in the lower part. The steps don't look full---so this might be graded REV of 38. 1938-D ANACS MS66FS. The steps look nice and sharp, but the holder is kindof nicked up it....so I can't be sure. The side steps are nice and sharp. Speedy
This is a pic of the first one, The second one is pcgs ms-66, the holder is so badly beat up I can't really get a good look at the coin, I would send it to be re-holdered but I am not a member nor do I plan on ever spending the money for a membership. That 38 is close to having full steps but not quite, darn. I have been noticing that A good amount of the 39's I've been looking at have a slightly rotated die, as with the case with this one, anyone else notice this?
I don't think you have to be a member to have a coin re-holdered but I could be wrong! In any case, try the Turtle Wax (not the liquid, although it might work just as good) with a slightly damp, soft cotton cloth and I think that you will be amazed at the difference. As long as the rub(s) are not deep and are not scratches, then it (the Turtle Wax) will remove most it if not all of the bad spots. Frank
Darn! Darn...you posted the answer too quickly for me to get in my opinion. I guess that means I need to check the boards more frequently. For what it's worth, my guess was NGC-65 on the first coin. I wasn't going to hazard a guess on the second.
I'eheard that brasso brass polish works good on scratched up slabs as well. I have never tried it but had a dealer recommend it! Good luck.
Sorry I posted the answers so soon. We have trouble getting noticed way way down here in the variety nickels section. Wish this section could get moved up closer to the "cool" sections! ; ) Anyway, I'm working on a BU Jefferson set that includes ALL varieties and all proofs. I have a very long way to go. Wish me luck! (some of these varieties are very difficult to find)
