Forget the penny. I heard the US is going totally cashless and are going to service the US cash cards via underlying precious metals and gemstones.
I haven't heard that it will occur at all, ever, but who knows if that is true. (my source was just arrested in London).
That number was based on a 2015 survey of coin and numismatic experts who believed the cent would be phased out in or around that year of 2026.
