Well, I don't really see the connection between metal prices and sleepers, so I can't make any predictions there. However, if you just want an opinion on potential sleepers regardless of market forcasts, I'd have to go with half cents and seated liberty dimes. Both have low mintages and low prices, which is often the maker of sleepers. I have a hard time believing any coins made in the last 75 years will ever be a sleeper, at least in any of our lifetimes.

I would think that this go around of rising silver prices, we'll see another cull of "junk silver" (and more then a few collectable coins by accident or on purpose) from the collector's market.

And by reducing the number of silver coins out there, it should make the survivors more valuable, yes?

I seem to remember reading something about the last big silver rush in the 80s where, after the smoke cleared, the "collectable" dates of certain coinage changed completely because of the post-cull numbers.

The prices I quoted are for melt value at yesterdays silver prices. If you were to take a Mercury Dime and melt it down, and take the silver content of that dime (0.0723 Troy oz) it would be worth $1.44 at yesterday market value.

But yes, low grade mercurys will sell for aroud a dollar. But that is the value as a dime and not as silver. As a dime you would not sell a 1916 D at melt value at any grade.

You can check these price out at coinflation.com.

Hmmmmm. That's an interesting remark about Ikes - all they copper they contain.

But I can't go along with that. Right now, copper (and nickel) would have to quadruple in price before the metal in a clad Ike would reach face value. And unless you buy in bulk, you'll probably have to pay more than face right now to buy an Ike. Now, that's real speculation.

I suppose if you can get them at face, you've got nothing to lose!
