It can receive and place calls. Its ringer was added however. Originally the ringer was a separate unit that would have been a box-like apparatus attached to the wall. It was rewired by a company located in Canada that sells original antique, usable phones. (Cited from: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/about-cdfl-from-reid-goldsborough.336609/)
Haven’t you guys seen the Flat Earth documentary on Netflix? The CFDL description reminds me of that crowd. Everything is a conspiracy because reality isn’t as interesting.
I always wanted one of those. I remember distinctly around 1975 my dad got a second hand rotary phone (which turned out to be mid 1950's). He never used it but I still have it and also never used it. I always wanted to retrofit it and use it, but alas, we are not even wired up for landlines anymore. This is likely very true, even if I dont want to admit it. There is plenty I really want, but very little I need.
I think we need to get this conversation back to ancient topics, (and no, I DON'T consider dial phones or Yahoo discussion groups ancient; stop making me feel so old) so I'll add an anecdote, possibly true, about Socrates. Apparently his admirers threw him a lavish farewell banquet on the evening before he was due to take his life via hemlock. Socrates entered the room, stopped and looked around at all the sumptuous food and fancy plates, silverware and decorations and said: "I never realized before how much I didn't need."
This is what I would like to know - Who is this dealer and is it willing to post a link to its coins currently for sale ? I for one would like to buy some of its coins with a guarantee from such a respected numismatist/ dealer. Hiding in the shadows wont work, show us all of your wonderful genuine non fakes !!!
I am missing something here. Who is everyone talking about? If you are referring to Reid Goldsborough, he is a long-time collector who is well respected by most collectors.
The numpty who called members coins fakes, claiming to be a dealer/ numismatist and one of the few ( the rest its friends ) people with the ability to know such things. Hope that clears it up @gsimonel
The negative comments above about the CFDL are about it as it was many years ago. I don't think they are correct about the current CFDL. The founder has not been active for many years. The rest of us (I am a member and contributor) mostly expose criminal dealers who are selling obvious fakes, sometimes among genuine coins of lesser value. They can then be put on fakesellers lists and beginners warned against them. There are occasionally questions about coins that are not false, but it has been years since that resulted in an unthinking condemnation. Don't think the CFDL spots very deceptive fakes--that is not easy from photos alone. But, if a new seller offers some valuable coins going inexpensively and you wonder if you have just stumbled on a chance for a remarkable bargain, the CFDL may have already discussed that seller. It would certainly be worth checking.
Were you following the other thread where a member of the CFDL condemned my coins with no explanation and absolutely no proof? If this is typical of the group I want no part of it.
I happen to like my landline telephone. I have a cell but I never leave it on unless I want to call someone or if in in another city away from my landline phone.
I halfway think the “CFDL member” who harassed two of our members may have been a fake. (I.e. a troll using a proxy account).
I have been collecting for many years and I would find it very difficult to spot a fake simply based on a photo unless there were a number of compelling reasons. The first is an obvious problem of style. The second would be a die match which was waaay to close for comfort. Some years ago I bought this coin Everything was great until I saw this one being offered at an auction OOOppppps Houston we have a problem. As you can see not only do we have a die match but everything else matches including the defects. I contacted my seller as well as the auction house The seller refunded my money quickly and the auction house pulled their coin. I think if one is to condemn a coin they first should offer proof rather than some blank statement.
Looking through my emails on gmail, the last post from Reid Goldsborough I see is from 2013, when he was on a one-year US roadtrip. He used to be very active on mailing lists, but has disappeared from my radar anyway - not that I knew him, but do recognise the name from many posts and a website. ATB, Aidan.
