    I'd buy that near $200.

BTW, my guess is based on the PCGS guide's price of one that would be graded three points higher --- plus another ten dollars, just because it is very pleasing toning. I used the price comparisons for 1, 2, and 3 points above a 63 and not 4 points above, because the huge jump in prices for one of this year and mm is between a MS 66 and 67. But I don't usually buy Morgans and don't pay much attention to their being bought/sold, so this is just one way to estimate what this might have brought.

Thanks for explaining your method. It’s an interesting way to look at it! Tune in later tonight to find out how much it sold for.

@Pickin and Grinin wins the round with the highest guess. This one surprised me (and others) as it hammered for $1,139.62 (with buyer's fee)!

If there is interest, we can continue this thread; @Pickin and Grinin has the floor.

Note (and I forgot to do this in my last post): when posting a coin, please include the guide price so we can establish a general idea of what a generic example sells for (can be average eBay price, greysheet, etc).

Might as well...my bid of ~$400 (before fees) held up until the last day, then it just kept being bid higher. I've seen multiple extraordinary results lately.

At that price, you are teleported to the bottom of the hole immediately...

Quite an interesting price..Guess someone truly wanted it. And maybe was bidding against someone else who really wanted it. I don't know who would value that color to the point of 1/4 the 'pricing value' (i.e. what PCGS posts) of one that is gem-quality MS67, especially since that grade has a very limited amount of coins, though MS66 does admittedly have a large number in population. I did not in my calculations put in any effort to look at populations or really try to find a point between 400 and 4000 that might be a sweet spot to guess a higher number. But I do know that many do love color and obsess over that, which is ok.

Perhaps the driver in price was more of a bidding war than carefulness in keeping price more realistic or perhaps I simply don't know the color market or even how to value a coin that has attributes that are very subjective. Or my lack of appreciation for Morgans as a focus of my collection. I will say that my assigning the ten additional dollars for very pleasing coloration was, evidently, unrealistic. Putting a 3X price point value would have gotten me much closer (take thee 400 given as a price for a MS66 and triple that, so $1200).

But when all is said and done, I would not want that coin at the price it got.

Another though on correlation in this, perhaps that makes a better way to evaluate a coin that is exceptional for pricing once you get into the huge price jump area between grades... look at the population reports for the highest grade value you might use (in this case I used the MS66 'value'). Both PCGS and NGC have their populations of MS66 coins at 1092 and 1131, respectively, and MS67 having only 95 and 46, with none higher than MS67. This out of a total pop of 126,235 and 142,967. Basically looking at pop reports plus using MS66 as the grade to place the value in somewhere above it (I used PCGS's 400.00), one might decide to use the total population in that grade to figure value.... and in this case, the total population gives, perhaps a way to put a top dollar on it... basically no more or not much more than the total population in the grade you use. Of course this would not be useful if the pops in MS66 were either substantially larger or smaller than they are. But throwing pops in as a way to perhaps gauge how much higher to go is an idea.

I guess all I'm saying is that I, as a non-collector of Morgans as a focal point, think that this came in at a price point for a coin three but not 4 points higher just due to the nice color. But with a wide gap to the 4th price point ($3600 more than the 3rd) being so large, it is difficult to know where to place it's value. And perhaps looking at populations in addition to 'prices' needs to really be a consideration. Perhaps if the MS66 pops were much lower then this could have gone for more and if the pops were doubled it may then have gone for much less.

    Just thoughts.
