I've had this coin a few years come in a flip in a drawer... I wasn't collecting at the time but I decided to keep it because the Toning and color weren't quite what I thought they should be for a quarter..I posted to sites on Facebook, 4, or 5, I think... nobody has been able to help, so my question is, .. is there anyone in this vast numismatics community that can help me identify what is wrong with the toning and lines in this quarter..? I do have several different angles of pics..
I agree. It's circulated, and we can only guess at what it was exposed to, but it's not worth keeping. Oh, welcome to CT!
Some sort of severe damage after it left the Mint. That coin has been bouncing around for nearly 50 years. Coins aren’t indestructible.
you have to remember that coin are used for currency. To buy things. They are made for that purpose. Proof/uncirc coins sold are designed for Numismatic purposes. Coins are not coddled for their uniqueness (well, some people do). Any and everything can happen to them. In the past 49 years was it in a fire? if so how? Well, there's camp fires and general structure fires (amongst many other types). If something catches fire do they immediately save all the coins first and foremost ? The biggest thing to take away is how to identify damage. that coin is damaged. It also has hit marks all over it, in addition to the surface damage/discoloration. have you tried any method to clean the discoloration off of it?
I appreciate the answers, and I I'm aware that it's Got environmental toning... I know that if it's not 100% clear, that is probably not what I think it is... With different angles of pics it almost appears to have letters on the neck, and the reverse side when shot at an angle , appears to be a head... Either way, this one is going in the collection album... Thank yall for your time..
Sorry but it doesn’t have any of that stuff on it. Your brain is making sense of random shapes made by wear and tear. Definitely hang on to it if it makes you happy but don’t think that it’s an error coin.
No, I have not tried any type of cleaning.. but with all this new information, it will most likely be cleaned an Re examined.. then if something is clear.. oh well, it will be put in the collection album for show..
One of the first lessons of coin collecting is to never clean a coin. If it's worth anything at all cleaning will lower it's value. also, it would help if you posted photos of both sides of the coin.
