1974 Littleton Coin Company Ad - 1880-S Uncirculated Morgan Dollar

I thought this was cool. I'm going through grandpa's coins, and found where he saved a print ad from Littleton coin company from circa 1974. A reply to the ad along with $3 would get you a new coin catalog, and an "Uncirculated US Silver Dollar". I love my grandpa (deceased) and he was a stickler for details and documentation! So he cut out the ad and linked it to the coin he received from replying to the Ad. I took it out of his Whitman and put it in a hard case.

Cool old ad. Along with the coin they would send you a few coins each month or so. You could buy them or return them.

 

I think your ad from Littleton is a little bit older than 1974. I think when you first posted the thread you had 1994. I think your ad and coin go back to probably 1964. The ad says the coin is over 80 years old. That would be 1960+. If it was 1974, guaranteed Littleton would have let you know the coin was over 90 years old. Cool find and gives you a little history into what your grandfather was doing in the early 1960's.

I keep the ads with coins from Littleton unopened. I haven't received one in a while. Although, I have received a catalog from them recently. I need some new coin folders and maybe a high priced coin or two.

 

Thank you. I knew I was off on the date at first. It’s really great going through it all, and it is certainly developing in me a more refined interest in US history. I’m a forensic scientist and was a science major and kind of fluffed off history until now. It’s funny how this is igniting a new interest!

 

In 1963, the U.S. Treasury Dept. released 1,600,000 1880-S Morgan dollars to the public. Probably where your Grandfather's coin came from. One of the Morgan guys would have told you this.

Oh wow, that’s a big offload and explains the choice of their give-away coins. Marketing. It works evidently... because he certainly bought more from them throughout the years.
