I love metal detecting. I’ve been very lucky. Recently I hunted a lot in Fernandina Beach /Amelia Island, Fl. Our local history dates back to the 1600s and 8 different flags flew over the area. Anyway this lot once held a house which burned down. Then 2 restaurants were built and now razed. On this one lot I found: 4 axe heads ( one was a broadaxe), a pearl handled .38 revolver, pocket knife, horseshoe, several 2 and 3 ringer Minie balls and musket balls. 1907 Barber quarter, 1898 Barber Dime, 1892 Barber Dime. 1901 Indian Head penny, 1892 IH, 1864 IH ( Fatty), 1858 Seated Dime, 1860 Seated Half Dime, 1853 Seated Half Dime. I thought that would be it but they tore up a section of sidewalk. Found a 2 ringer Minie Ball and....a 1718 2Reale!!! Thought it was a fake but it’s been confirmed as a real Reale.
I just told my mom about what I found and she is dying laughing that I stole third base... I didn't know guys really.... Lol
Actually it's not used in baseball. It's a sign post base. In baseball the three bases are 15" square and filled with a soft padding. The underside of the base has a post that fits into a hole in the ground. See attached. I thought you would sleep better tonight knowing you didn't steal a base.
I'm in tears also but then again I feel terrible . You know how long it took me to dig it up? 10 minutes that was long. To be told it was third base..... I wasn't thinking. I get carried away....lol now tomorrow I have to dig the hole back up and stick it back in. that will take a while. Metal detecting is more work than I thought. but very fun and addicting...
Oh sweet!!!! Now I don't have to put it back! Thank you for researching it for me. I said I'm going to get myself in trouble one day.
That doesn't fit in a hole in the ground. It fits over a peg that is buried in the ground. We used to use a coffee can filled with concrete with a 1" square "peg" protruding out the top.
There is so much to apprieciate about this post and you as a person through sharing what you have found here. Your personality is what shines!
I can have little bit of fun on here too. Don't have to quit because of one person doesn't like it. Didn't have too read my post.
Well I think this picture answers the question. You dug up the base anchor for third base. The grounds keepers should have the tools to put it back in place correctly.
I had to talk to someone about it. They haven't used that field in years. Wich is good. There is a brand new one on the other side of the school.
