I know some of you will disagree and say enough is enough with new Mint offerings but...I think the Mint missed a chance last year by not celebrating the anniversary of the Ike dollar at 30 years old. This year is the 30th for the SBA. I would have liked to see a P,D,S, Proof Clad S, Proof silver S and a reverse proof. (W)? It would have made a nice addition to the very short lived set as a whole as would have been a nice continuation of the Ike's. I would have purchased either or both. What are your thoughts?

Yes, I would have been in on a deal like that as I have personal history with both..... The Ike's were one of the fuels that lit my numismatic fire as a youngster.... Then a few years later when the SBA's came out, nobody wanted to use them. So the government sent them all overseas and made us soldiers use them!.... I don't know that the SBA will ever see much numismatic love. But yes, they should commemorate the Ike. I would be all in.

Since both issues, IMHO, failed to accomplish much of anything, I would have passed.

I agree 101%! The Ike failed to circulate because the need for the coin for commercial purposes was zilch, and the Susie B. fell flat on her face because it was too easily confused with the quarter. Why should the Mint commemorate two coins that were produced for 8 years and 3 years, respectively?

I agree they were both failures but the concept would have been nice for a one year set. So much better than the American Innovation series, which I do not intend to pursue at my age. After all, they did commemorate the Kennedy Half with a special set and that coin was also a failure overall. It might also have sparked some interest in these series with newbies entering coin collecting, and the historical significance of both subjects. And part of the failure of both was that the vending industry would not adapt at the time.

Not clear what you are trying to argue for. They did a 1 year anniversary of the Kennedy half and as you say that was a failure (also not sure why you are saying this). So why do you think a 1 year anniversary of either Ike or SBA dollars would be any different?

I don't know, a commemorative version in real .900 (or .999) silver might have got my interest - especially the Ike.

Imagine a well-struck, high relief, full size, proof Ike in real silver - like a real silver dollar used to be.

I would probably buy the Suzy B just to keep my Suzy B collection complete. :yack: Otherwise not that interested...

I edited as I meant the half dollar was a failure in general, not the special set. Same reason, pretty much the vending industry. This could have been limited edition sets of the Ike and SBA and there are still empty slots in most albums. I guess I am leaning towards a historical aspect in the issuance of sets like this. Not much in school is taught about Ike or SBA and maybe new collectors just entering the hobby might have found these interesting and started these sets or delved into the history of both as a result.

I think we'd be doing the 40th, not the 30th, if my understanding of how numbers work is correct.
