Just looking for opinions here on current and future collectibility of these dollar coins. Is it worth buying them for face value and stashing them away?
If you want a set then it is worth buying them at face. If you are trying to get rich then probably not.
Not in my opinion, They don't have intrinsic value such as Morgans or Peace, and people just don't care for clad. Almost all coins over 60 years old are silver. In 60 years, 60 year old coins will be clad.
I constantly see Ikes for sale at coin shows and shops for $1.50-$2 each. What I don't know is DO PEOPLE BUY THEM?
I don't think they're worth hoarding, because they carry a really low premium, and I don't see that changing during my lifetime. I'd rather buy something that will appreciate or offer regular returns, or at least something I'll enjoy having more. Ikes and SBAs do not "bring me joy". If I could get them at face value and then quickly flip them for a net 20% profit with relatively little effort, I certainly would.
In my opinion saving Ike’s or SBA is a waste of money. Then again, who knows what future generations will like.
Yeah, the key to success is saving something that nobody else saves, and that people will want in the future. The easy approach is to just save everything. Unfortunately, that also leads to being crushed by collapsing stacks and then eaten by cats.
In life, sometimes you eat the cat. And other times the cat eats you. Did I word that well enough to not get in trouble but still make the joke?
Meow the Cat will probably take issue with the first part. And she/he will likely ask for dipping sauce when she/he meets you. Steve
Not many folks collect Ike's. I put together a book. Other than that, they are just another buck to me. I sure wouldn't pay a premium for them. And that's forty plus years after the series stopped running. I suspect the SBA's and newer dollars will fare about the same.
What everyone else has said. Collect 'em if you like 'em, but hoarding for future monetary gain will probably disappoint.
I held on to a bunch of all because we have a big family and I hoped one day to have a bunch grandchildren. Well, now I have 13 grandchildren and 17 (+ 2 in the hopper) great grandchildren. I am putting together some 20th Century Type Sets for them with my hoard.
I bought a set of SBA PR69 DCAMs because I wanted them. I don't know if I'll ever sell them or be able to sell them, but I like them. They are pretty easy to get a hold of at this point, so they don't look like a great investment.
I only have one Sac dollar that I paid a premium for, and that is one of the 5,000 2000-P burnished Glenna Goodacre pieces. I think those will always be collectible.
