I don’t know about this ghost s or whatever, but can we get a clear photo of the entire obverse? That first photo is incredibly blurry.

 

The damage caused the appearance of part of an S, but it isn't ,IMO Jim

When looking at something unexpected, the brain finds something close in your memory and latches on to it and it is hard to dismiss. Same applies for sounds. Remember the old " Listen to the song backwards and hear the devil" from the 70s.
