What Coin Magazines Do You Recommend?

I have been "collecting" coins for a long time, but it wasn't until the past year after joining CT, that I started buying and reading all the books I can about coin collecting. After all these years, over 20 years after buying my first set from the mint and after 25 years since receiving my first coin from my dad, that I am learning about the hobby.

My Question is what coin magazines does everyone read/subscribe to?

I have already subscribed to Numismatic News. I am thinking about subscribing to Coin World and maybe joining the ANA to get The Numismatist. Thanks for your responses.

I am a CW, NN and CDN subscriber, and since joining ANA recently, the Numismatist as well now. Unfortunatly, I bought something from L&C coins a while back and now subscribe to the catalog mailings.

I usually buy at least 1 book per month as well.

I like Coin World the best. I also get Coin Values. It has nice pictures, but not as much news. I subscribed to Numismatic News also, but it duplicated Coin World so much that I'm not going to renew it.

Coin World is excellent. I get Coin Values with my Coin World subscription but I usually only flip through it.

I don't subscribe to NN because it would pretty much be a duplication of the info in CW.

CDN (Grey Sheet) is great for coin values (as long as you understand the limitations).

The Numismatist comes with my ANA membership. It usually has a good article or two and most informative articles are very well researched.

Many, many, many years ago I subscribed to CoinAge magazine. I think that subscription ran out in about 1971 or '72.

coin world, the numismatist (ana member), aside from books, i read many forum discussions and am also a member of the society of silver dollar collectors. also from the ana i have taken the numismatic diploma course and have purchased robert cambell's seminar on detecting artificial vs natural toning. david bowers' and his writings have also been a huge blessing to me. the members here on cointalk have also been a major blessing to me and i would thank you all in person if i could.....steve

I subscribe to Grey Sheet (CDN) and pick up the occasional copy of Coin Prices.

I like Coin Prices because it shows mintages and is a fairly quick reference for "retail" prices. Not a great mag (don't really think any of them are) just easy and convenient.

I also pick up the occasional copy of Coin World or NN. Some decent articles and I do like to see what the large dealers are selling and asking.

If you ever get into currency go with Bank Note Reporter.

Thanks for everyone's responses. This helps. I probably agree with those of you that said that you like Coin World better than NN, but I already subscribed to NN. I found CW at my local book shop this weekend and definitely liked it the best. But if it contains the same info as NN, there is no point on getting two subscriptions to basically the same thing. I got into NN because my local coin shop carries it and recommended it. Im sure it will be a fine source of info.

Coin World has a new magazine format and this has allowed for a lot more color inside. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting weekly news and wanting to learn about coins in general. I also like Numismatic News but not as much. There is info in NN that CW doesn't have.

Just Coin World right now. It's a little too heavy on U.S. coins (modern U.S. coins in particular), so I might end up subscribing to that new world coin magazine pretty soon.

Also, I am signed up for a ton of world coin and ancient coin (and a few U.S. coin) catalogs. I never buy anything from them, but it's just something else to look through when I'm bored. :)

NN is a great resource for me because it has the most up-to-date mintage figures for mint products. This can be especially important for a collector like me. For example, currently, you can still purchase 2007 Silver Proof Sets on the mint website. The useful thing to know here is that the sales so far have been well under 1 million sets. Now, when all is said and done, will they sell another 250,000 sets or 300,000 sets to make this more of a typical issue? Will they sell out soon? Noone knows, but this is for sure, they are not going to make any more and when they start selling the 2008s later this year at the very latest, they will stop selling this issue.

This to me means it is worth buying a few extra hoping that the mintage ends up low and the set becomes more desirable because of it. I get this from NN before it is available anywhere else, and is almost enough reason for me to subscribe in and of itself.

Thank you everyone for the additional responses. I really appreaciate the guidance. As mentioned in my original post, I just subscribed to NN. For an additional $8 a year with a subscription to CW ($49) you get a subscription to Coin Values plus on-line access. Also thinking about joining the ANA for several reasons, but really like their mag. I am looking for technical info on US coins. So far, I have been really pleased with NN, CW, The Numismatist and even Coins (I believe that's the name of the publication) I just got through reading lasts month issue and they had a great article about the Carson City Mint. Other than NN, I may continue to buy these at my local bookstore to further evaluate them before I jump into a subscription. Now I know where Elaine gets all her weekly "info" on coin mintages! ;) :smile

What would be the best magazine for collectors that collect only US Coins? Coinworld? Thanks.

I just picked up some dated copies of Numismatic News today from my local coin shop. They will give you the unsold copies once they are a few weeks old. You may want to try picking some up at your local coin shop.

As noted in the previous posts, there are about 4-6 magazines that focus primarily on US coins. They are Numismatic News, Coin World, Coinage, and Coins. You can also receive The Numismatist by joining the ANA. ($36/year) Also, for $8 more a year, you can receive Coin World and Coinage together. $41 vs. $49.

I would recommend buying these at your local coin shop or book store before subscribing to any of them. I subscribed to NN because that was the first one that I read and liked, but since then I found out that I really liked Coin World. I will most likely join the ANA which includes a subscription to their magazine.

Hope this helps. Just review the previous posts for more info.
