    Poorly annealed dimes... also can occur north of the border (although, I suspect this is a plating issue).

    Before they are struck, planchets are annealed, which means they are heated.

    Except for cents, they are annealed to soften them a little bit yet it also makes them stronger. This prevents them from being brittle when the dice strike them, and then that way they don't crack or shatter.

    They also anneal the coin dies, and I think even the hubs as well, for the same reasons.
