First let me say the this coin is striking proof or not. Now I have an observation to share and question to ask. The O.P. picture shows the date with obvious rounded top edge and the picture by (craig a) shows a distinct flat edge of the top of the date. I know there were only a couple thousand made. Would they not have been made at the same time and how many dies would have been made to produce this proof with that low of a mintage??? The difference in these two for that distinction has got to say something, but what? Allen
IMO...It seems to me that Larry's coin has rounded rims and that at, 1 to 2 o'clock the rims get thin. Mikes coin has uniformly squared rims and a squared date, which is indicative of a proof Indian Head Cent. While I don't want to impugn the reputation of ANACS ( I have their graded coins myself) I feel that Mikes coin is more likely a proof ICC than Larry's. Larry's coin may very well have been struck later on in the proof making process and shows some die wear or it may not be a proof cent. Either way, I be proud to own either or both coins. Bruce
I would have a hard time telling ANACS what they know......BUT , mistakes do happen, typos etc....My advise would be to resubmit and remove all doubt. I bet if they correct any mistake such as this, there would be no charge.... If you had covered or cropped the insert I would have guessed not proof, but I cannot be sure looking at pictures
How is that many MS-65 or higher cents from 100 years ago still have most of there gleem. I just saw a beauty 1909 on Sunday. I have seen coins from that era with there mirror like finish still in tac and as you said there were no plastic slabs just a opinion
By gleem I beleive you mean Mint luster? Yeah true. But Mint luster is nothing like proof mirror. I own proofs from over a 100 years ago still with a mirror finsh as well as some that don't, but I have seen plenty of proofs that have lost there mirror finish. I don't think I understand what your point is? All I was saying is that I BELEIVE IT ( THIS COIN IN QUESTION ) TO BE A PROOF and STORAGE may be why it looks as is doe's.
From what I understand there was only one die used for this proof. The only marker I know of is a file mark above the OF, on the obverse. Looking at Heritage images the file mark is not always there. This makes me think there were more than one die used for the year. I'm working on getting more information but please add what you know.
