Photographing coins without a USB microscope nor a camera. iPad and iPhone used. With the coins inside their capsules and haven’t to my knowledge been removed. Without the coin capturing me or the device in its reflection, it looks more real life but hard on the focus and detail. With the coin capturing the black of the device in its reflection, it looks more unnatural but the details are refined and sharp. Which is the proper way to photograph? Does scanning on a photocopier work? Ignore my ignorance, lol, very new to this.
My recommendation is to use two gooseneck CFL lamps (if you have them) that you put appx at the 10 and 2 o'clock position from the coin. Put the camera parallel to the coin and move the lights forward/backwards and left/right until you're happy with it.
You can save a lot of headaches by opening the capsule so the the glare won't come into play while taking the photo. You don't have to remove the coin, just take the lid off.
Thanks. Actually, they don’t open or my fingers are too big, one or the other, I can’t open them. Took one to a dealer and he couldn’t pry it open either. He gave it back to me and shrugged his shoulders, lol.
They come off, but yeah sometimes they can be rather tight, but that's because they are supposed to be tight. To open them, get a sharp knife, and carefully insert just the edge into the tiny seam between the 2 parts. Don't try and push to hard or it'll slip and cut you. Just push gently and work your way in. Then give a gentle twist. Then work your way around and the top will come off. And no, you won't hurt the coin with the knife because the edge of the coin is surrounded by the hard plastic, so the knife can't touch the coin as long as you are careful and go slow.
