Here is my favorite token/So called Dollar I have ever seen. I picked this up in a huge collection of Morgans. This beauty was in a bag of silver and copper tokens. I asked the guy how much for the tokens. He said $40 bucks and I noticed a few silver foreign pieces in there so I thought to myself.... Self this isn't a bad deal. Some nice foreign silver and copper tokens. Well this beauty was in there when I got home and I started researching it. From the website I seen it said less than 100 known in silver. The mint struck these pieces at the 100 year celebration of our country. Sorry for the bad pictures it looks a lot better in hand. Enjoy!
It is listed in Hibbler & Kappens "So Called Dollars" As #20. Centennial issue, official medal. Very Scarce = #251 to # 500 known. Originally sold for $3.00 limited edition to the Expo (U.S. Centennial Expo 1876, Philadelphia, PA.) Very nice attaractive piece. Oops, never mind, I just noticed your title.
I was reading somewhere that there were less than 100 known strikes. I have heard values anywhere from $150 to $1400. These things are probably only worth what someone is wiling to pay. Question... Will something like this appreciate greatly overtime or will it just be a small percentage. Like 20 years from now.
tdec: Great question. As you stated, it is worth only what someone is willing to pay. So-called $'s are more popular today, especially with the issue of the new So-called $ book (the original but revised). However, (Big However), they have never been as popular are coins. I have a small collection of them, and enjoy them but for appreciation (in value) stick to coins. Even during the current coin boom they have increased a bit, but not greatly.
