2017 Indiana. Sorry folks Meow did not mean to take over the thread. Meow just wanted to show a die chip in the middle of nowhere can happen. Tis a very high bump, as least a high as the highest part of the design. But it is also very small one. It is a very unusual one for sure.

And one more little thing Meow spots. Notice in the first picture the bump warps the reflections near it. So it did have a very small effect on the near by field area.

Looks like it took a hit from a nickel. Meow sees this exact damage in rolls of BU nickels. BU Nickels have very square edges, and they easily damage other coins in that way.

We were discussing a DIE CRACK, not a die chip!

Based on your pics, the area in question looks recessed into the field. There also may be some raised metal on the top edge. This is the characteristic appearance of a hit/gouge with displaced metal that occurred after it left the mint. On the off chance that the area is raised (you really need clearer pics), then it would be an internal die break, as other have already pointed out. One thing for certain, it isn't a die crack.

I would strongly recommend that you go to sites like Wexlers doubled die or error-ref and spend some time learning about the diff types of mint error and how the occur

Meow wanted to show a chip that was in THE MIDDLE OF A FIELD. Meow is sorry, Meow knows Dongs don't like anything Cats do.

I only used the bold print to differentiate between the two. Sorry! I guess it would have been better not to use all caps. I wasn't yelling.

FWIW, I don't like "Dongs" either!;)

By the way, I think you should start a new thread about the "mole" on your quarter. I'd like to discuss it, too. Please be sure to post, not only the close-up, but full images of both sides of the coin as well. (You know how some people are when you don't post photos of both sides.)
