I should not comment but its hard not to. Many members have given you Logical explanations for what You and You alone are seeing, these may not fit what You want to hear but you need to remember that these are Logical explanations where as Yours is not. I don't know the size of a Dime but I am sure one of the American members can give an idea of the screws size based on your thought, pretty sure it would be Tiny and would have left a lot more damage than you are showing. Just my 2p worth, not having a go.
Nothing to be sorry about, just listen to what us older collectors are saying. We have been doing this a long time.
If you really think it's an error, spend the $50+ and send it off to a TPG. We are just offering opinions based on experience and knowledge. Your choice, but without authentication who would be interested in buying it?
damage you want to convert damage to something that you recognize with. The shape so happens to convince you that it is a screw (your bias in explaining that it is something you recognize) A screw isn't flat but is circular in a conical way. It could have been flattened I guess .. but it still has height, and would either (a) prevent the rest of the die from hitting the planchet, or (b) have a large indent into the die. That indent would take volume to fill and the rest of the coin would then thus would probably be a weak strike. Of course the die hardness compared to a screw is another issue altogether ... But .. it's damage anyways that has you convinced that it's a flatten screw. To me, it looks *exactly* like the Rod of Asclepius, which I guarantee you with my personal bias that it is more correct than a screw.
Please don't think I don't appreciate your input, I do. I'm not interested in selling the coin. I was just trying to share what I found. From here I can plainly see what I believe is a small screw. I've contacted MDC to submit this with a couple of die clash Lincoln's I have. I can see that my pics don't seem to do the coin justice, in my opinion. If MDC accepts the coin I will post those results, whatever they are. Thank you all for your comments.
That's Good Scoobie There is a guy on here that's always flipping a coin in the air he is an Error Professional …...He has more errors than all MLB teams together.. These guys are just as informative as any of the COIN GRADING COMPANY. I personally don't know any of them.... but most of the time ………… there spot on..
O.K., I sent Jason Cuvelier a pic of this dime as well as a couple of Lincoln's he said: I agree the '83 had at least two successive clash events - it however may not be in good enough shape to find evidence of a counterclash - which would be nice. I think I have too many '83s listed - if I delist some maybe. The '99 is probably not strong enough. With my last conversation with Mike Diamond we agreed that I shouldn't expand the TDC section. If I get some help with the site, if that person wishes to expand that section the '99 would fir in there. The dime I am not sure about. The images aren't suggesting one thing or another. If you're implying an exotic struck through I'd be surprised there wasn't an area that was weakly struck from the depth of an object essentially clogging the die. Foreign objects tend to do that, even something like thick wire. Fibers don't do that. A small screw should though. Maybe more pics? I sent a couple more pics but haven't heard back. My theory is that a screw fell onto a planchet and was struck leaving the impression of a screw on the die. This coin was struck sometime later leaving an impression on the coin. I know it's a stretch and understand the position is suspicious. Here's a couple of pics with my new camera. This case is closed for me, thanks for your opinions. Lou
Let's throw this into the mix... I think it could have come into contact with another reeded edge coin right on the brow. This would leave an impression resembling what the OP is seeing. The spaces are too wide and shallow to be made from a screw at high pressure.
Maybe Press Roosevelt had stitches the day he posed for that pic. Lol Yea these guys know what they are talking about, whether it pisses me off or not, I have tremendous respect for them. They always poo poo my error coins too, but hey, that's how we learn, right? Anyways don't get mad, keep searching. Later Dug out,,,,,, get it?!?
Thanks FooFighter. I really don't get mad, just frustrated. I know what I see and I know how hard it is to see just in pics. I've moved on, I'll keep the dime. I actually do appreciate the interactions here. The more I know the more I know nothing. lol
