Here is the first of two posts about our latest antique shop run. Jen wanted to run into town this AM and drop off some stuff at the lodge, but I wandered over to the antiques shop and... : #1. A complete 1969 Shell Oil Bronze State Coin Collection, $14.00 #2. Lucky Pocket Piece (Dial-O-Matic) 112 year Callender from 1844-1956. $4.00 Take Care Ben
Ha! If you put the address 7617 W. State Street, Milwaukee, WI into maps.google.com, you can get a real neat street view. Looks like a pretty new area.
Serious question here Ben, What motivates you to buy stuff like that? I only ask this because my local dealer will buy just about ANYTHING old. I, in turn, have bought a lot of this "junk" from him as I like old stuff. Not as bad as I used to be but always thought "well it's cheap and someone will want it". This is why I have so much stuff lying around. I'm going to have to start posting it I guess. clembo
It's almost like I have a clarinet reed in my head and when "browsing" sometimes it starts humming a tune. Seriously, it's a rare piece indeed which gets the Bonedigger nod when I'm on the scrounge. These three just happen to be the most recent result... Take Care Ben
I remember my mother getting those Shell oil things in the early 1970's and giving them to us to play with and lose.
About 99% of the stuff in antique shops around here consists of costume jewelry and grandma's broken furniture. A rare piece like the 112 year calendar was a great find! At that price, they were giving it away. This is the sort of thing that you might see on the Antiques Roadshow. Someone obviously put a lot of effort into designing something so clever and making a small mechanical device like that. By the way, how large is it?
A little over 2/5" in diameter with a milled edge. I'm guessing it's aluminum it could be tin but doubt it.
If it's aluminum, it's probably fairly new. I think aluminum was pretty rare and hard to make in the 19th century. Or, maybe it was just a very fine and expensive piece at the time.
Chuckle, I'm sure it doesn't go back to 1844. If it did the name might have been "Old Farmer's Pocket Piece." or something similar, LOL...
I will add that "antique" shops can be a good place to find later date, previously over priced silver coins, I have bought several 1964 Kennedy's for $2 each in the last few months.
Very Nice find on the Shell Oil Bronze. You could make some money at ebay with that,... It would most likely bring in 10k at feebay with feebay keeping 9,999.90 in fees leaving you with 13.90 cent loss. ......then again maybe not! Frame it and hang it on the wall.
Nice finds Ben I do like the calender, and any chance of some closer pics of the state oil bronzes? I have never seen those before and am intrigued My answer to the question why buy them would be because they are unusual and rather interesting (Followed by the pack rat syndrome LOL)
I don't know, but I remember trying in vain to get them all... 50 trips to the gas station, even in a 1967 Dodge, was way over the limit of our family's patience!
