This 2017 "P" quarter has something between the 0 and 1. 20-17 is the outcome. What is it? IMG_20190322_093402_361.jpg

How can anyone tell from an image that small?

It's a circulated coin. There is also a "triangle" shape near the center of the coin. Anything can happen while a coin is in circulation. You have to understand that there are a finite number of ways that errors can occur during production, but there are a gazillion ways that a coin can be damaged in circulation.

It is a gouge. Thanks! Ken
Well, I have a 20-17 P quarter do to a die gouge for my collection.

It doesn't appear to be a die gouge, but just some damage inflicted in the coin's circulation.

What is the damage called? Dent, scratch?

dent, gouge, hit, ding, whatever you prefer, or the all encompassing term-- damage.
