What is a good book about Portuguese numismatics? In English, Portuguese, Spanish or German. I'm particularly interested in the last 500 years as well as Portuguese colonies.
    Thanks for any help!

Agreed. This work by Alberto Gomes is the most complete and thorough treatment for Portugal and its colonies. I believe the 2013 edition is still the most recent, but it can be hard to find. The older versions are occasionally available and, while not as current, are still quite useful to someone entering this area of numismatics.

Be wary, however, of the many titles by Gomes and others which are not the same book. Gomes has numerous other titles focused on certain periods of Portuguese issues, but only the following are comprehensive in the manner you requested:

The 1st (1988) edition was simply: Moedas Portuguesas (1128-1988)

The 2nd (1996) and 3rd (2001) editions are named: Moedas Portuguesas e do Território Português antes da Fundação de Nacionalidade

The 4th (2003) through 6th (2013) editions are named: Moedas portuguesas e do território que hoje é Portugal

ALL other books by Gomes and others with similar, but different names, are NOT the book you are seeking.

    Enjoy!

If you can find one of these it is pretty interesting also. It is more of a short history than a catalog. I found it to be a good read.
