This 2013 p is a wierd looking coin. Can anyone comment as to what this could possibly be. Thanks! 20190228_183951.jpg 20190228_183951.jpg 20190228_183940.jpg

Why do you think it's weird looking?

Ordinary nickel worth $0.05, just heavily circulated.

Rough surfaces. They do look a little strange, but it's just the result of heavy circulation, as @Legomaster1 indicated.

I think we're just not used to seeing these newer designs with heavy wear. I wonder how well some of these low relief designs will hold up over time. Some of them might end up looking strange indeed, after they've worn down below XF or so.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I considered the year of the coin. So much damage so soon, makes me wonder if someone altered it. Your thoughts?

More likely it was dropped in a parking lot and got driven over or something that caused the rapid wear.

The coin doesn't have scratches or cuts. The metal looks to be rough, rolling waves of water. Looks like something could have been on the die when pressed.

    Waves of metal.

Corrosion has that affect.... salt put down in said parking lot?

Exposed to something perhaps? An acid for example?

Wouldn't acid rust it? No rust.

I think it's just had a tough life in a relatively short amount of time, is all. High mileage.

The third side luster is shiny. Like a normal nickel.

I agree with an annealing error.

Look at the obverse of the coin. See all the indentations along the rim? This coin clearly has seen a beating.... Dont get me wrong, I understand how you feel. if you look at my thread I have here, see link below, I am told a similar thing... damage after minting....

I am not convinced by the pundants either! If you think it is an error, hang on to it. Go to a show, find a dealer who does a lot with error and let someone look at it in hand. I know with the coin in hand I do not see damage.... but?? who knows...
