The Year of the Five Emperors refers to the year 193 AD, in which the five claimants for the title of Roman Emperor were: Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus, and Septimius Severus. This year started a period of civil war when multiple rulers vied for the chance to become Caesar. A plot to assassinate Pertinax by the Guardwas discovered by Pertinax, and he was assassinated on March 28 when he confronted the coup leaders. I do not have a coin of Pertinax, Didius Julianus, or Clodius Albinus, but I do have Commodus and Sep Severus. The following coin of Septimius Severus was struck in Emesa to commemorate the victory over Pescennius Niger.
Denarii of the Alexandria mint: Commodus Pertinax Septimius Severus Julia Domna Clodius Albinus There are no Eastern denarii of Didius Julianus. I question just how widely he was recognized as emperor out of Rome itself. I sold my only ever coin of his in 1974 and never felt the urge to replace it. I believe the Alexandria mint Pescennius Niger coins are aurei https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=673357 so I'll show a denarius of his from Caesarea. Most of his coins are attributed to Antioch. I particularly suggest anyone interested in a Pescennius Niger coin be doubly careful. There are many fakes. One was withdrawn from a recent big name auction when they were notified and the coin was immediately listed on eBay. The most common fake is the Slavei but there are many others. It is not a coin to buy carelessly.
I love this time period so much and have left out some key players...double dip? Don't mind if I do! Though on a side note, @Finn235 I would marry that Didia Clara. The portrait, the hair, that freaking patina though. Yowsa And @dougsmit as always, excellent Pescennius. And that Albinus portrait is striking. Here's one of my favorite recent purchases of crazy ol Com-bomb and his wifey crispy cream. Can't forget Dom-bomb!
