Well, I told you it was tough. This coin is a rare unlisted variation, a spelling error. As such, no exact reference was available! However, this round goes to acl864, for recognizing that there WAS a spelling error, even if he didn't quite grasp the significance of it. Great job! Honorable mention also goes to Vercingetorax and acanthite. This very coin was sold, misattributed, in a November 2002 CNG online auction. http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=26417 Also, discussion on the piece http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=39589.0 Postumus AE double sestertius Cologne ?, 259-268 AD IMP C M CASS LAT POSTVMVS P F AVG laureate, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust r. LAETITA, AVG in ex. galley right RIC - , Bastien - , Cohen - Note: Similar to RIC 144 or 207
Congrats to acl864! I did see the spelling difference, contemplated calling it a barbarous imitation, but decided the obverse looked too professional. In the end I ignored it.
That was more luck than skill, but I'll take it. I'm thoroughly enjoying the contest and learning alot. I'm looking forward to the next challenge. Andy
