I went to my local bank and asked for some rolls of half dollars, after some searching they realized they had a whole box ($500) in back. I took six rolls to start. The best I found was an uncirulated bicentennial.

Is it worth searching the rest of the box? They said they could order more from the Fed too if I wanted. What do you think? This branch is only a few blocks from the Minneapolis Fed.

keep searching, there's still a good chunk of halves left from the box, I'm sure you'll find something by the end of it.

an even $500 box could be a dumped searched box.... but since your searching at face, I have known silver searchers to skip some clad coins that are worth more then face.

Buying new boxes would be a good idea..... just dump the searched halves in another bank.

I say go for it. And whatever you dont keep, put back into your back account ;)

Get the box, and if they actually are willing to order you more and not make a big deal of it, GO FOR IT!! Some branches even within the same bank have different policies. One branch I go to will order them once in a while and not charge me anything yet another branch of the same two miles away wants to charge me 3% service charges. As for the results you get, this will vary. I got one box that had over 40 40% (yes forty 40% coins), only 3 90% Kennedy and 9 (nine) franklin halves. I bought two boxes that day. The next box had 0. Yes ZERO coins of any silver. An interesting thing to note is that I have found proof coins as well as coins dated 2004 and 2005. These were not released for general circulation.

That one box I mentioned above was by far my best box ever. Most often I come away with just a couple 40% coins and more recently I have noticed many coins marked with a sharpie which means someone else in my area is hard at it.

    Good luck!

    Yup, go for it.

I searched $260 in halves today. $100 were already mark but I got 2 silver-clads out of them. Guess they only wanted the big boys. 40% is still worth over $3/ea at $20/oz silver spot :)

And if they will order you some boxes then do it up... just make sure you have a good reliable dump bank.

I have searched half the box and no silver. I should see if I can dump these ones somewhere before I get too many more.

I would do it. Your not risking anything but time, if the bank only charges face value.

I went to a few banks just to search, but my primary bank will order by the 1000. now let me ask you this. I would imagine that its better not to take the box of coins you just got back to the same bank ? also whats the best way to search for silver. is it better to get the halves in paper rolls or plastic. I just started so any information would greatly help. thanks in advance.

I bet its a dump box that someone has searched. But who knows? It does not cost you anything. (if you redeposit them)

I have been having fun spending some of them. It is funny to see the looks on peoples face. I spent $6.67 for lunch, I gave the cashier a 5 dollar bill and 4 half dollars. She looked at them real hard and then went to talk to her manager. He looked at both sides real hard and told her to accept them.

She then cam back and said "and 67 cents". I said "I gave you seven dollars". She looked down at the coins and then back at me. I said. "I gave you seven dollars. The coins are worth 50 cents each". The manager came over picked up one of the coins and looked at both sides, shrugged his shoulders, and walked away. She handed me 33 cents. She still had a puzzled look on her face when I walked away.

Now that's funny. It's amazing how many people don't know much about coins, but it's their job to accept customers money and produce change.

Don't use the same bank branch and try to use a different bank chain.

I've found that dumping off a lot of coins at one branch of a bank they'll send some of them to other branches of the same bank to save them ordering any from the fed. I always mark my rolls when I drop them off too (my bank doesn't have a free coin counting machine :( ) so I'll know if I'm picking up some of mine.

I get rolls from any bank that will give them to or order them for me and dump them all in one bank. I also always trade my coins for bills, check them for stars or old/ interesting notes and use the bum notes to buy new rolls.

I have had a nice bit of good luck lately. I bought two rolls of halves today, the first time I have ever roll searched halves. When I tore back the paper, I saw one silver. I was expecting a 40% Kennedy, but was thrilled to get a 1958 Franklin! This is after I pulled a 1936 buffalo nickel out of a roll at work last Sunday!

My recommendation is this: Never take the coins back to the Bank where you got them as you may end up getting them back later when you request more rolls. Open an Account with another Bank not associated with your main Bank and deposit the coins there. Most Banks will not charge you to order or cash in (in this case, Deposit) coins, if you have an account with them! Mix it up a little by getting rolls of Halves and Quarters at your main Bank, then Dimes and Cents at the other Bank. I have a friend that has accounts with 4 different Banks for picking up and cashing in rolls of coins. Heck, as soon as another one offers a $50 deposit to your account for just opening a Checking or Savings Account with them, then I am sure that he will be up to 5 Banks!

Went to the bank the other day and asked for 2 rolls of nickels. First time I ever did that. Found a 45 P Jeff. Made my day.

What is everyones favorite magnifying power? I like the lighted type as long as the batteries hold up. I seen a self standing model but it was only 2 1/2 power, but it had around a 4 or 5 power insert spot.
