Hey there folks. Just received this 1880S as part of a large US lot and was wondering about the forums input on grade. It has interesting dark toning and great detail on both the obverse and reverse. There seems to be luster underneath the toning. Thoughts on grade would be appreciated.

I'm at AU-58 due to wear on hear and the eagle. A nice clean coin.

I'm in the AU camp as well. Like the 81-S, the 80-S is known for a good strike, but the wear on her hair and the obverse leaves should keep it from receiving an MS grade.

For me, the pull-away toning has always been interesting.

I'm at a low to mid AU. I want to see cartwheels from the luster, but it's just not there. My guess is that it was over dipped years and years ago and has since toned. But the dipping looks like it stripped away most of the natural luster. Add in the appearance of wear on the obverse and reverse along with some marks in the fields from circulating and I am at AU-53 - AU-55.

An old timer once taught me this would be typical envelope toning. I'm at AU-55 as well.
