down to my last 2 unpriced coins and hope you guys can help me again. 1 of each of an 1888-H, and 1888-CM mombasa 1-pice xf. i know i cant find anything on it. thanks again for all your help.
I could have sworn that I responded to your prior posting about these coins. At any rate 1 pice = 1/4 anna in this territory, formerly the capital of British East Africa and now part of the nation of Kenya. An "H" mintmark signifies the Birmingham Mint in England, and a "C/M" signifies the Calcutta Mint in British India. Mintage is listed at a combined 630,000 for KM#s 1.1, 1.2 and 1.5 with no specification of how many were produced at each mint. The combined 2,352,000 for the others was all produced at Birmingham. Without a picture, and information on the size, it is impossible to attribute your coins. There were five versions of the coin minted in bronze, all one-year issues dated 1888. KM#1.1 is 24.9mm and all the othrs are 25.4mm. KM#1.1 is described as having small letters on both obverse and reverse. In the 2001 3rd Ed. 19th Century SCWC XF it is valued at $8. KM#1.2 is described as having medium letters on the obverse and reverse. Listed at $5 XF. KM#1.3 is described as having small letters on the obverse and medium letters on the reverse. Listed at $7 XF. KM#1.4 is described as having large letters without serifs and dots between words on the obverse and reverse. Listed at $4 XF. KM#1.5 is described as having medium letters on the obverse and reverse. Listed at $7 XF. The pictures in Krause are not clear enough to differentiate the letter sizes.
http://http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=34271 this is the post your thinking about i do beleave. here are the pics. on the 2 coins. first one is the CM. 2nd one is the H.
As I said in the other thread, I am not familiar with these coins and have no references from which to evaluate the size of the lettering. Unless one or both of your coins is pegged as KM#1.1 by its size, I can't help you any further with attribution.
