I have an old pre-revolutionary pocket watch from Russia that I have been researching for days now. I have figured out that along with other things, it looks like there is engravings of 3 coins front and back, on the inside. The first has a man with a helmet and wings. The middle is a right side profile of a man and the back is a full length shot of a woman maybe in a garden. The third is a left side profile of a woman and the back looks like the world surrounded by ivy. I only ask if anyone thinks these coins sound familiar because they may help me with my research of the watch. I am hoping to get very close to the year this watch was manufactured. I'm not trying to sell it to any of you- but if you would think that looking at it would help...follow this: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/independentauctionspecialists/item/BEV0037 (that's the price my client wants by the way I'm still trying to prove it's worth that) Any help would be wonderful. Thanks so much! Beverly
They do not look like coins to me. At least none that I am familiar with. Sorry I can't be more help.
I'm just glad you took the time to take a look. I appreciate it, it was worth the shot. Take care and thank you again. Bev
I cannot identify them, but those are medals. They were awarded to the company that designed the watch.
Oh thanks so much! Medals, I never thought of it. I suppose if I can get in contact with someone who knew about the medals then I could possibly pinpoint the year of make..... This is getting to be quite a mystery and I'm enjoying every minute of it! Thanks Bev
Sorry, I couldn't help you with the date. Yes, many watchmakers include their Medal Awards as part of their (for lack of a better word) logo. Sort of a way of bragging on their accomplishments. These medals are awarded for excellence in design, craftmanship, etc. at shows like the Worlds Fair, the Paris Exposition, and so forth.
This is a common practice, not only with watches. Depicting awards on a product is historically a way of showing folks who are potential buyer's,just how good the product is. ~ Jim
