Good Afternoon; I have come across some 1998 D Lincoln cents with some interesting glitches in the motto. Right now I have three of these. I have searched for a 1998 D DDO info and have found none. There was one on CoinTalk that a person thought was one but it was definitely machine doubling - flat shelf. In the photos here you can see lines in the G, O, E, and 1st T, also something going on in the top middle of the D. In my honest opinion this not machine doubling. It may be die deterioration but I don't think it is that either. There might be a little something going on in "LIBERTY" also. Anyway, thanks for looking. If you want more photos, just let me know Mike
I see a lot of split plating issues. Have you looked into "split plating" as at least part of the problem ?
No, not yet, I will check into that - I did find a Variety Vista site that had two people saying they had seen a DDO but no photo's -- Thanks
I looked up about the split plating and doubling, most all the photos show a slight tear in the copper just outside the letter or number and exposing the zinc layer below with out distorting the letter or number. Although some of these coins do have some splitting there are several of the letters without that split that do have the wavy line / different level of the metal, usually about 2/3 s towards the top of the letter. I checked my lot of 1998D's and found about 5% had some very slight to obvious lines. I found one that really seems to have a serif at the end and one with "wrinkles" that I have see in some doubled dies. Anyway I will post some more revealing photos in a new post, so the new photos can be seen first (New 98 D ?) MIke
