Hello! that was a little joke lol! well hmmm...this is the 1st time I try to grade something from pics...I have a 1878-S too! well...for me is AU not sure what #, because though (in the pic) it lacks of luster and has some ...hmm dirt the hair details a very very clear and nice and well for Liberty, flowers, hat...eagle feathers are very neat as well for the leaves and arrows...I think is AU... however let's wait for expert opinions here
...btw, how did you got such a nice scan?!?! Ive been trying to scan a few coins lately but is just doesnt show the details so well...for example Im tryin to scan my 1878-S Morgan (Im curious of a pro-grade now hehe) but the scan isn't as shiny as the coin and it doesnt shows the hair details so well...any tip? Thanks!
Scanning I found that scanning through an airtight holder gives good clear pictures. If I scan through a 2x2 cardboard holder, the scan is not as clear. The scanner I'm using is a Visioneer which is low end, but hey, the scans look good to me. I had to use 300 dpi scan so the pics would upload to this site. You should see the 600 dpi pics ! Also, crop your scan area to the area just the size of the coin. Good luck.
thanks lilburn, I'll try that...but now I have some software problem...is crashing everytime I click the "Accept" button... oh, and it seems it's an AU so far, hehe Im not that bad grading then! hehe I still need to practice to be more confident of my own grades
Software IvanV, try downloading the latest drivers for your scanner. Tha should fix your problem. I have several Morgans like this one that was handed down from my grandfather. I figured the luster would keep the grade down. There is very little if any wear and all the features really look sharp. I've always heard to never clean coins, so thats it looks dirty.
Because the '78-S typically had a very strong strike I would have a hard time grading this example higher than AU 50. It does show a good bit of wear on both obverse & reverse at all high points. Luster would be the determing factor in this case and the coin may even grade XF 45 if sufficient luster is not present.
AU50 maybe 53... There appears to be wear evident over much of the face and hair, plus the eagles breast is somewhat flattened from what looks like wear.
