HI All, I just captured this great Titus denarius. It was again misattributed. This time the misattribution concern not a dating combination bu the position of 2 captive figures on the reverse. The auction house said this coin was RIC 105 which has Man on left Woman on right. On this coin it is Woman on left man on right. That makes this coin RIC 103. In this case it makes little difference with regard to stated rarity, both are (R2). Perhaps David can confirm that 105 appears to be a bit rarer. I know the coin is dark but I absolutely loved the portrait of Titus. It is really well done imho. Please post your darkly toned coins or coins of Titus. Titus, 79 - 81 n. Chr. Denar (2.96g). 80 n. Chr. Mzst. Rom. Vs.: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M, Kopf mit Lorbeerkranz n. l. Rs.: TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P, zwei Gefangene sitzen Rücken an Rücken an einem Tropaeum. RIC 103; C. 306; BMC 37; BN 34. Ex Sammlung Shlomo Moussaieff, London, 1948 - 2000. Condition: Dunkle Tönung, partiell Auflagen, ss Ex: Gorny und Mosch e-auction 263 - 07.03.2019 10: Lot 3615
I just found this information about the previous owner of my coin. All I can say is wow, what a life he lived. https://www.coinsweekly.com/en/Arch...om-the-Moussaieff-Collection/8?&id=731&type=a
Nice catch! Your coin is indeed RIC 103. The male captive has his hands bound and the female captive is weeping, much like the dejected pose seen on the Judaea Capta denarii. RIC 105 with the captives switched is scarcer, I know this because I don't have an example, but I do have a 103!
These are 2 of my favorite toned denarii of one of my favorite emperors and also a darkly patinated sestertius. He was a great general, but it was a pitty he died so young.
So, any idea then which RIC category this would be with Titus facing right rather than left? The reverse looks like the RIC 103 as on the poster's coin. Römische Münzen, MÜNZEN DER RÖMISCHEN KAISERZEIT. Titus, 79-81 n. Chr, AR-Denar 80 n. Chr, Kopf mit Lorbeerkranzn. r. / Tropaeum mit zwei Gefangenen. Silber. 3.29 g. Sehr schön, leicht korodiert
In post 15 of this thread you posted a picture of RIC 102. The link you posted features a different coin. Please be much more clear when you are posting looking for help.
Not sure what link you are referring to. I posted a picture of the RIC 102 denarius I asked a question about. The description I posted below the picture was the one that accompanied the listing by BAC Numismatics.
