The hammer and sickle symbol is alive and well in Transnistria ... I don't have this coin and will thus borrow an image from Wikipedia: The Austrian coin (in post #6) I find interesting because their eagle, introduced 100 years ago, has always had three "class" symbols: The sickle represents the farmers or peasants, the hammer is for the working class, and the mural crown means the bourgeoisie or middle class. During the years of austrofascism and the later Anschluss, a different eagle was used - but when the republican eagle came back after 1945, the broken chains were added as a symbol of the liberation. Interesting history, Christian. If I had noticed the broken chains, I would have no idea what they symbolized. It makes a powerful statement, for sure. Bruce
Here's an English Penny with interesting hammer & sickle and V counterstamps. Not sure the meaning of them, but since the coin's from the WW II era, it may be promoting a communist victory in the war. It may also have been issued by Irish communists and connected to the ongoing Irish / English conflict. This one I have filed in the "uncertain meaning" section of my political collection. Bruce
Interesting piece! Hmm, I wonder whether that "V" referred to the idea of a Fifth International in that year. Wild guess, I know. Christian
