Anyone know the best way get get my lincolns out of a old shrunk plastic tube. So bad the lid will not even twist off. Thanks Chuck
LOL smart edited Maybe its just me and my total geekiness but I love looking up patents and there is a patent for a little machine that cuts open wrappers AND tubes.. its basically a razor blade set to a predefined depth that you slide along the tube.
I call them freezer rolls. Probably not the best thing but I've pulled it off a few times. Put them in the freezer until well frozen. Crack them on the edge of a counter or some other hard surface. Have some clean white cloths to place them on and a few extra cloths to dab up an moisure as they thaw. Unfortunately you will most likely damage a few coins in the process. On the bright side you may get some real gems. I used to buy "freezer rolls" from my local dealer CHEAP. Got some blazing wheaties out of these rolls but like I said lost a few as well.
Seems I've tried this method before, Guess I'll be trying it again. The lid is a slip on (not the screw type) and it is even locked up tight. It's a BU roll of 60-D's. Not priceless but wanted to look for varietys anyway. Thanks Chuck
http://www.toolbarn.com/product/greenlee/11915/ You should be able to get this cheaper at Home Depot, but I recommend using a brand new one so as to not get the coins dirty. Don't cut all the way to the coins. The tube should be able to crack in half long before you cut all the way through.
Freeze the roll, Then tap it on a sharp corner. Or freeze it stand it up and tap the bottem and top with a hammer. Just hard enough for it to crack down the sides. Or you could alwasy just drop it in to HOT water so the plastic gets a little soft.
About 4 hours in the freezer and a couple of good whacks with my channel lock plyers and it's done. 2 lost from post mint damage ( the cap was holding them till the bitter end). Now sandwiched in paper towels, between two books untill they reach room temp. Thanks everyone! Chuck
Most materials (including plastic) shrink when cooled and expand when heated. The heated cap should come right off. I would heat the tube cap with a blow dryer. Hot water would also work but I would put the tube inside a zip lock bag so the coins don't get wet.
