This is a coin my good friend purchased. He asked me to gather some opinions on how others would grade it. In my limited experience, these large cents often have corrosion, pitting, etc. that impact grading beyond wear. This would not be a coin I would want in my collection. Not sure he will keep it for long either! Grading opinions?
Although the coin has some unfortunate pitting, it is not a terrible example of a 1795. It has nice detail and color, and often with early copper a person must trade defects for detail. A perfect planchet with perfect color draws a serious premium on copper from the 1700's. I would rate it as net G. Mike
Looking at the ANA grading guide the obverse looks to be G-4, the reverse doesn't look to be quite G-4 but it looks better than AG-3. I'd grade it G-4 as you may have lost some detail through the pics. Nice 18th century copper!
VG detals, corroded, net G. Finding one of these coins that AREN'T corroded is a serious challenge. A little corrosion on these coins at this grade is nothing to be concerned about, but it does net down the coin a grade or two.
That's not a half bad one though for the date, has a little damage, but not too bad IMHO. I'd say G myself. Neat coin. :thumb: Phoenix
As i am geting better with these large cents, i will also venture an opinion: VG 8, net Good 4. Pleasing overall piece. It is BTW the Sheldon 76b variety, commonest of 1795 cents (with one cent high in wreath). Regards, Eduard
