Seeing no dissent, Coin #2 it is.

The next two aren't fantastic, but good enough for my purposes, and the price was right ($19 each shipped, they were part of the same lot).

In some sort of redemption, I would like to mention a TV advertisement that I have seen only once, and it had to do with Morgan Dollars for cheap. The ad said that one could buy a BU/UNC Morgan dated somewhere between 1879 and 1900 for $19.99 plus shipping. Heck, I thought to myself, twenty bucks for a Morgan in BU/UNC sounds like a decent deal, and HALF what Mister Mike Mezak wants for his random year Morgans, so what the hey, let's get one.

They mentioned a URL in their TV ad, so I jotted it down and went to the site the next morning. Seeing as the next morning was MLK day, I figured nothing would be happening, so I knew not to expect anything in the form of a shipping acknowledgement, so I let this aspect of it go then forgot about it.

The web page noted the name of the actual dealer, but I have forgotten it meanwhile, but the site given in the ad was realmorgans dot com, and when you get there the first thing you notice is a warning that the site would close down in seven days—probably not true, but... There were options that allowed you to order from one to five coins, with reduced shipping for each additional coin you ordered. There are written instructions for how to return your coin(s) if you are not satisfied with your purchase. So far, so good.

The next day I received an acknowledgement email with an order # on it, but no tracking, so I replied that I would like to have a tracking # if available; one was sent within a few hours. I checked this morning and their parcel is "out for delivery."

Twenty bucks with an offer for a return with no questions asked for a BU/UNC Morgan of just about any year is a good deal, especially for those beginning their collections. I don't think they will do such things as make sure you get different years if you order more than one coin, but I'm hoping that the coin that will be arriving later today is worth a reorder for three or four more. The page does specify that only a few thousand of these coins are available, so there might not be any more out there to buy. In fact, I don't know if the page is still live, that's up to anyone who's interested to discover for his self.

HOW can this be some sort of redemption??? This is a PEACE dollar thread.

You're a big boy, search and find the Morgan threads and post Morgan dollar related things there.

1924. Having trouble deciding between these two. The first has some hairlines on the neck, but they're scarcely visible in hand, and the second is listed as MS-63, but the blotchy toning on the obverse detracts.

Thanks for the input... I'm truly undecided, but this makes me lean more toward the first.

Thanks... I don't want to be a "BLAST WHITE!!" troglodyte, but the fact is that ugly toning can get in the way of the enjoyment of a coin.

I agree. That second coin, in my view, reminds me of an old Red Foxx line: “Got hit with an ugly stick.”

I like both "blast white" and original skin toning. I don't go for "toning" just because, it has to enhance the coins eye appeal for me. The most important for me is eye appeal and I think your #1 coin has more of it than #2.

I don't yet have the 1924-S (a bit of a challenge in higher grades), the 1925, the 1925-S, or the 1926. The next I have is the 1926-D, but I'm rather embarrassed by it. I only paid $17.27 with shipping for it, but it has a lot of hits all over the obverse and reverse. It's a good candidate for upgrading.

The 1926-S is a better coin IMO, even though it's only in a VF grade, I'd say. I'm not going to prioritize upgrading this one. This was only $15 with shipping (as part of a lot), which I think is an absolute steal. However, I can't congratulate myself on my eye too much, because I also spent $21 on a different 1926-S that shows unmistakable signs of improper cleaning when photographed (not obvious in hand with moderate magnification). Had I noticed this earlier, I would have returned it. Alas.

The 1927 I got for $28. Overall the condition is EF, though I'm not a fan of the hits on Liberty's face, of course. It's a better date and this is probably about the best I can do. In hand it's still attractive.
    1927o.jpg 1927r.jpg

The 1927-D is more worn than the 1927, but overall a nicer coin, I think. And I got it for less ($23.50).

    1927do.jpg 1927dr.jpg

No 1927-S. No 1928, obvs. I've got a 1928-S coming in the mail from the UK, supposedly, but it hasn't arrived three weeks after I won the auction. I also don't have any of the 1934's. So the last things I have to show are the 1935 and 1935-S.

I'm angry with myself about the 1935, because I took a risk and bid on something without a great picture. Then when I got it in hand it looked fine, and I didn't return it. But now that I photograph it, the signs of improper cleaning are unmistakable. If the principal joy of coin collecting comes in striking unexpectedly good bargains and finding hidden value, then its distinctive sorrow is in overpaying for something not very good, and feeling exploited in the bargain. Well, here it is.

Finally, here is the 1935-S. I bought this from my LCS, and way overpaid for it ($35). It was listed as fine, but I think it's VF. I was hoping to build a rapport with them and maybe take my custom there again, but that didn't happen. Maybe because they're the only coin shop in the whole area, they just didn't have any interest in a conversation with a customer. But at least they don't overgrade their coins.

I think I've learned a lot from this whole experience of starting on a Peace dollar set by buying raw coins on EBay (mostly). I've certainly learned what not to do, but it does seem possible to get good deals if you're patient and know what to look for. Once I've got some extra cash, I'm going back in!

    I'm at it again.
For some reason I looked at Peace Dollars and saw this toned 1922-D Peace dollar.
I bought it to update my set

I really like that replacement, @dwhiz! That rustic toning is very pleasant to my eye.
