Hi, I notice that Kennedy Half Dollar is missing from this 1970 Mint Set ( the picture on the right). Can anybody please tell me if this could be considered as a Mint Error and therefore should command any premium price. Thank you. Shyamal
Looks like they have 2 Cents in error. Packaging mistake. I have seen this happen before. But I don't think that would command a premium. *so @SchwaVB57 in the next post explained it better. I was incorrect.. But I swear I have seen these sets with 2 of the same coins!
In 1970 only a Half was minted in Denver, none in Philly. The extra cent is the San Francisco business strike of 1970. The set looks correct.
Not meaning to do a thread hijack. @LaCointessa posted the the correct answer here. Just wondering since there was another recent thread about a potential tampered mint set...... Can a person with nefarious intent tamper with these and make it appear correct? Seems a re-heat of cello would be pretty obvious and distinct.
I have a 1970 mint set just like yours, and there is also only one half dollar. So, it was probably intended packaging.
It seems that sham was on Cointalk before I joined, so he isn't really a new member. But, I hope to see you more on Cointalk, sham.
I had to stop buying mint sets online because all of them have either had their coins replaced or had some damaged. I go to shops and antique places looking for them that way I can look at them first. Careful guys
