Hi everyone I have a 1984d penny faded “of”. When some of the letters are less prominent then the other letters. Is this called faded lettering or weak strike? I find this some times on different coins. Also here is a 1988d weak strike as well. (Bottom 3 pictures)
The area opposite STATES OF on the obverse is the base of Lincoln's bust. It takes a lot of metal to flow into there and fill it. It's not uncommon to find this area weak in the reverse. Not an error
Oldhoopster is correct. Very common, just watch you pocket change and you'll see more than your fair share of them.
Perhaps someday it will be a variety. So if I find one where the letters are missing completely then it’s an error? Or would this still classified be under “grease filled die? “
