I don't think so - ancient coins usually depict a deity or a ruler (sometimes considered one in the same) and would have more writing on it.
Not true. Plenty of Archaic coinage does not depict a deity. And almost NO Archaic coinage depicts a ruler. This coin appears to be a complete fantasy piece. Although it is Archaic in shape and theme, the artistic treatment of the eagle is decidedly modern. I doubt it has any connections with Mexico - the eagle/serpent theme was common in ancient Greece as well.
I believe what this coin is trying to emulate is the coinage of Olympia as the listing says. With eagle grasping snake (or some other thing like a hare) and winged nike common to those coins....could be wrong...I dont think it is ancient, style is well off the mark. but certainly quite a lot of ancients do not have busts of rulers on them. Here are a few from Olympia
BTW...this seller also sold an EID MAR coin for a grand total of 55.00!! The listing is convoluted, he says its ancient but also calls it 're-inspired'. Probably to cover his edited...he does that anyway by saying he does not guarentee that it is authentic though he sells it as such. The person who won the auction is also selling fakes...sad sad sad. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290205201866 That coin, if it were real, would cost 50,000 to 100,000 USD.
Yes, whenever I nice Greek coin is one ebay I automatically assume it is a fake (unless by a repuatable seller). BTW, that is a horrible fake.
The person is also selling this lovely Vespasian coin: Covers himself in the listing: This is a large ancient roman coin that was never graded but indeed beautiful and 16.7grams with a distinctive look and rare. I won't confirm the authenticity of this coin since I know little about ancient coins and this was never graded or tested! Thing is...all this person sells is so-called antiquities....This coin looks like a rough sand casting...I would say everything this seller is offering is fake. Sellers like this are all too common.
One more example of why not to buy ancients on ebay unless you know the dealer well or are very experienced in fakes.
