Totally very guilty of buying on impulse. I can go into my guys shop with one goal in mind and something glitters at me behind the glass case and the world ceases to turn until I am holding the coin that flashed me. Very, very, very guilty.

Yes, I often buy on impulse. This is the main reason that I don't surf ebay often.

I don't think I have ever walked into my LCS and came out with what I intended to buy

I think we all have "oooh shiny coin syndrome"

You might as well have titled this thread as: Are you good with money?

It's perfectly possible to be "good with money" and still make occasional small impulse purchases.

It's also perfectly possible to plan and deliberate over every purchase you make, and still be terrible with money.

Now, can we consider this threadjack closed, please?

In my younger days, yes. I've become more disciplined as I've aged. Even when I have extra funds, I tend to wait and stick to my want list. I like to "window shop" and add things to my want list, though.

Not often. Almost everything I buy is tied into my collecting plan. Having said that, if I didn’t have a plan, my house would have a coin here, a coin there and a coin everywhere.:D

Unfortunately when it comes to coins, I impulse buy often. Thankfully it is usually small impulse buys. I do abide by my "plans" when it comes to filling holes in my albums.

Here in the Bay Area, no. But, whenever I happen to be in Reno, or Carson City... then I have a strong desire to buy half the local coin store.

I impulse buy, but only because the dealers and sellers always refuse to sell only what I’m looking for at the moment. I’ve only managed once to go to a coin show and buy something on my intended list.

Back in the day I used to. But now SS says NO. Or if I get the urge I think of Fred Sanford-"You big dummy"".

When going to shows, I have 2 pools of cash. One is my "quality coin" money that I use for buying very specific coins that I've researched. The other one is "beer money", normally what I would have in my pocket when I go out on the weekend (or should I say when I used to go out, I'm getting too old for clubs and last call).

"Beer money" goes for impulse buys. "Quality coin" money goes to something significant such as a 1955 DDO or 3 legged buffalo (all past purchases). Not sure about others, but it works for me

Absolutely, sometimes you have to. A coin you don't expect to find pops up and there is no way to tell when you might find another.

Looks like I'm in the minority, but no, I've rarely bought on impulse. I have a list of coins I'm interested in, or at least categories I'm interested in, and that's what I focus on. I have no problem walking out of a coin shop or coin show empty handed. That's probably not normal, is it?

I buy what I like. I’m not looking for any one coin. I buy for eye appeal. And of course for resale. But if I love it I buy it when money is good. Lately I haven’t really been buying coins

Having said what I did already, buying anything without preplanning to buy it could constitute "buying on impulse." When going to a coin show or coin shop, there will always be things there we did not know about. If you buy one of those things in a purchase that was not preplanned, you are buying on impulse. However, if you able to weigh things like spot price, resale value, availability of the item in the marketplace, and other factors, your unplanned purchase can be still be a wise one.
I would not consider that to be an "impulse buy" in the sense of a cat or a woman seeing something shiny and deciding they must have it. That is impulsive and irrational.
