I think your decision should be based on what you intend to do with the coin. Keep it to admire? Sell it in the future, hoping for a profit? I personally like #1s eye appeal and if I wanted it to admire, that would be the one I'd chose. Good luck and let us know what you do.
True. But the gilt pieces should more appropriately be called esais or patterns. The proofs are of the type and materials used for circulation.
They are attractive, and have better surfaces than the copper pieces, but my tastes have changed. I think that my favorite surfaces are the bronzed pieces. Maybe it's my love of chocolate - dark of course.
I went with option #6. I think both are nice but each has their cons, including the price and the small spots that you mentioned. That is just how I would look at it if thinking about adding to my set. I do believe either option would look good in your collection.
I personally looked at the copper as a perty coin but the thought that it has been over graded definitely crossed my mind. I think that that would bother me in hand more than anything.
Rob, knowing absolutely nothing about this series, I find coin #1 more attractive. Also, keep in mind that the copper example probably doesn't look like that in-hand 90% of the time and only pops that color when you bounce direct light off it. Still a very attractive piece, but i'd go with gilt.
LM I don't collect proof pennies or 1/2 pennies but the Irish gilts are harder to find and generate quite a bit of excitement. Wish it was a cameo designation but still seems a fair price. If you intend to hold onto the coin for a while, I would have to say gilt, if you intend to sell it anytime soon, save your cash and look for some better deal.
Well, I say go for the non-gilt. It's a lovely coin IMO, and different from your previous purchases. It looks like the current gilt is one grade lower than your prior one (if I'm looking at the pix on collective coin correctly). I would be concerned that in the back your mind, someday, you will compare it unfavorably to the coin you used to have and it will nag you. Plus the copper one is pretty. It will also allow you to enjoy your newfound financial relief a bit better and you can bank the difference for a future purchase. I'm interested to see your updated box too. And, mostly I'm hoping the 1901 Victoria is safe from purging. Until your Victoria needs the money .
#2 any day for me my Lord ! It has the beauty of its modesty while #1 is unnecessarily shiny ! Q PS : both are gorgeous of course
