Your coins as art

So with you folks who are generating high-quality photos of your coins, who's been taking the next step and making their own posters of their favorite coins? It seems like a great way to enjoy your coins without degrading their security. And even better for folks who find themselves selling a favorite someday- you still have a nice image of it to enjoy..

I've used imagestation for 16x20's made from a 5 Megapixel digicam, and the results are excellent. Of course I'm talking about shots of the coliseum and pantheon at night, but the point is that the quality is there..

There's room for creativity here too- a giant coin image may fit perfectly under the glass of a round end table, and so forth.

If anyone has used images of coins as art, tell me all about it, and post pics if possible.

    Here's One for Ya

    Hey Invictus,

I created this poster for our coin club. Actually I was the first secretary for our club and facilitated the creation of your charter and by-laws.

I had access to a plotter and decided to create this poster. I used the coins to give it character. Yes the coins are some of my favorites. I looked at literally hundreds of pics before I selected the ones I wanted to use.

    Keep on Collecting!!!

Is that legal paper? It actually looks like a special parchment in the image. Well done, I like it.

When you say "plotter," do you mean one of those drafting printers or what? How's the detail up close?

Don't know if you follow that guy on www.coppercoins.com but he actually sells art based coin items. He is famous for his artist rendition of Lincoln, others and even something of his was involved in the reprinting of the first Red Book. He sells many such art works dealing with coins.

Thanks for the link, Carl, that was interesting.

At the moment I can only find the VDB sketch and the mosaic poster. The poster is nice, I'd buy it if I didn't "see" a doubling of Lincoln's nose, which I find distracting. What else have you seen them offer?

It was printed on what is called a plotter. The plotter priints from rolls of paper of various widths. This sheet is aprrox. 2.5 feet by 3.5 feet tall. I'm not at home right now or I would measure it exactly.

The paper is poster grade, that is, its not as thin as regular note book paper.

That's a time piece for any respectable collector. It would look nice in my den/spare bed room. The coins look like their toning quite nicely as well. I think I'll try a reproduction of this when I get the chance.

    Thanks for sharing Bone!

Not sure. You would have to just ask on that web site. I think the person that has that web site is in the process of moving to Florida so some of his paintings or sketches are not being updated lately. Just keep on asking there.
OK now Bonedigger. Where did you get that clock or did you make it? Really impressive.
However, without numbers how do your know what time it is?
I like the idea of a Quarter for the Quarter Hour. Dimes for each incriment but shouldn't those have been a Nickel for the 5 Minute section and then a Dime for the 10 minutes? Also, nice touch to use a Half for the Half Hour. Should have been a Ike dollar for the 12 possibly.:)
I sure am critical of a really nice clock and if I had it I sure wouldn't care what coin is where.
If you made that you should really look into selling them. I suppose you already know where to acquire the workings for a clock but if not check out www.klockit.com
I've made many clocks from items from that place.

Plotters, I remember them well and lots of spilled ink too. Jen (wife) had one out in the barn which she used when she was actually doing magazine page layouts (or something like that) but we sold it a few years ago to some competition, LOL...

If those were nickels, he could have used a Liberty head reverse for "5"

Oh, and I can see there's some tiny, very uniform, lettering that says "last united states silver coinage" so I'm betting it was manufactured way back when.

Nice visual response to my question, thanks. Did you flip the dimes at :25 and :55, or did it come that way?

Very nice posters. But you need one more - Pink Floyd's Dark Side.

I noticed a Greek coin with a swastika (long used as a symbol of good luck before the Nazis hijacked it).

Do these represent the final result, or are you planning more with these images?

Ahh, but the Dark Side poster is so common! Have you ever seen the Back Catalogue? :high5:

If you're talking about the one from Knossos, its not exactly a swastika (although it is seen on some coins) - its the labyrinth of Minotaur/Daedalus fame.
