I have a Buffalo nickel in an old, green label PCGS holder labeled MS66 that I think is worthy of an upgrade. I want to send it to NGC to try to get an upgrade. Would I have a better chance of an upgrade if I crack it out and send it "raw" or if I leave it in the holder and send it in as a crossover. Opinions, experiences?
The chances of an up-grade via "cross-over" service are extremely remote. That is due to the fact that graders tend to be more conservative when having to evaluate a coin through a plastic holder. There is also the bias factor. On the other hand, if you crack the coin out, you face the possibility of a lower grade or, to a lesser extent, a no-grade. I have seen it happen to the sharpest coin people and with coins they never would have imagined. As another alternative, why not submit it to PCGS for re-grade in the holder? One other question, though - are you wearing rose colored glasses with respect to the "old, green label PCGS holder"? Many coin owners suffer from that condition.
Car10... do you feel it is worthy of an upgrade based solely on the merits of the coin itself, or is the "Old Green Holder" mystique a factor ?
Hello all ,Mark may I ask why would it come back no grade . can you give some examples .i am still new and try to learn as much as possible ..is it damage from breaking slab ?
Every once in a while I see a coin which, even though it looks problem-free, is returned as "improperly cleaned" or "altered surfaces" or "artificial color", etc. The odds of that occurring should be quite slim in your case, but, every once in a while a submitter is shocked at the results. If possible, I'd suggest showing it to someone who is highly knowledgeable and getting a free, unbiased opinion, first.
Thanks Mark. It was the bias factor I was most concerned about. I didn't know whether they would look at the grade on the slab first and then come to their opinion or make an opinion based only on the merits of the coin. I think I'll leave it where it is and save the submission fees.:smile
hi. would you consider posting a pic to see if others on this site might be able to give you an opinion? not same as seeing it in person but it would be easier to comment. best wishes....steve
