As some of you have seen, I've done a major downsizing of my collection and just sold my best pieces in order to pay some bills (eliminate my credit card debt, fix my car, and maybe put a little in savings). I'm still in the game, though, and when I exceeded my sales goals, my mind actually went around to buying again. I picked these two up because they've been in my watch list a while, and weren't horrendously expensive, so ... why not? This is my first Republican bronze. Been wanting an ancient with a galley on it for a while, too. Close enough. ROMAN REPUBLIC, Anonymous. AE, Semis. 211 - 207 BC. Hispania mint. Saturn / Prow right. And, though I did not used to be a fan of satyr/Pan portraits like this, they've grown on me, and this one in particular struck me. Besides, I have always been a fan of griffins. (Bonus points for having a sturgeon on it, too!) Thrace. PANTIKAPAION.. Ae 21.. 310-303 B.C. As struck, no circulation wear. Republican bronze... satyrs... Pantikapaion... griffins... share whatever you feel is appropriate!
Really understand, Rob on the crunch issues! CONGRATS caving in on the RR AE's... they are very cool... and Semis are just a neat coin! ><..haha...well melord, that's how we collectors are...yesterday, while i'm burning boxes i've saved to sell stuff (for years)..i'm shouting, "i'm gonna sell my stuff'..while waiting for stuff to come in the mail..9_9..that's how we roll!
That pan portrait could have enticed me as well! Very nice coin for your shrinking/ growing collection. @Alegandron Why are the Griffin and Satyr not SINISTER!
LOL, well, neither are LATIN / ROMAN when sinister means left. OR, it could be the more modern meaning of sinister...
bwahaha! Since I saw the Sinister on the women of Carthage and Bloodthirsty Tanit .... With all those babies and children in the graveyard, I thought of the more modern meaning!
Tanit and Baby sacrifice, in the eyes of the Romans, what was one of the driving forces of misunderstanding. One of the reasons Rome HATED Carthage.
I wish I would have had more money to give you! I would have went for that fantastic 1913 buffalo nickel.
Both attractive coins at @lordmarcovan , but really dig the Satyr ! I've still got Republican Saturn/prow combo on the list, but here is my cool Pantikapion coin! Crimmerian Bosporos, Pantikapaion. 304-250 BC O: Head of Satyr left, wreathed with ivy. R: Bow above arrow, ΠΑΝ, AE 20mm, 5,71g, 12h. Ref.
